Treatment Programs
Our adult treatment program provides drug and alcohol treatment for people over age 19. Our youth program provides treatment for adolescents age 13-18. Both adult and youth programs include family services.
We determine each person's needs for recovery and then recommend the type of treatment program that best meets those needs. We offer inpatient, short-term residential, partial care/day, intensive outpatient and outpatient treatment services depending on each person's needs as determined in the evaluation. Our team approach addresses drug and alcohol use from educational, emotional, social and spiritual perspectives.
All of our treatment programs use the 12-step model of recovery pioneered by Alcoholics Anonymous. We focus on enhancing self-esteem and educating people in how to cope with stress and emotions without the use of chemicals. While in treatment, clients participate in individual and group therapy, complete written assignments and attend Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings.
We focus on developing skills in communication, decision making, assertiveness, use of free time and self-esteem building. In addition, individuals gain factual knowledge about the effects of alcohol and drug use, and they gain insight into why they use chemicals. We also help families examine and improve their communication skills to reduce conflict in the home and promote better family relationships.
Outpatient Services
Outpatient services: These services are flexible combinations of group, individual and educational therapies. Individualized programs meet each person's needs. They may involve one or two group sessions per week. Outpatient services are best suited for:
- Clients transitioning from more intensive treatment options
- People at high risk for relapse after completing a more intensive treatment program
- Individuals who are already in recovery but have a specific problem, such as grief, which threatens that recovery
- Those who do not meet the criteria for more intensive treatment options
Partial care/day treatment: This option is a four- to eight-hour daily program that includes groups, lectures and recreational activities. Participants in this treatment program meet at least three to five days each week. Individual and family sessions are also provided.
24-Hour Services
During the first few days of inpatient or residential treatment, contact between the person in treatment and others may be limited for therapeutic reasons. However, our adult and youth treatment programs are not locked units. As treatment progresses, we encourage recreational activities and family visits.
Detoxification: This service is for people experiencing acute or potential withdrawal who need medical supervision to safely detoxify from hazardous drugs including alcohol. We assess each individual for continuing care needs during this program. Full medical services are available 24 hours a day.
Medical inpatient care: This service is for people who are chemically dependent and in need of a structured living setting and medical supervision provided by staff physicians and nurses. Inpatients also participate in group, individual and recreational therapy. They begin work on the 12 steps. The medical inpatient service has a structured, full-day intensive treatment schedule.
Residential (non-medical inpatient) care: This program provides the same highly structured, full-day intensive treatment schedule as inpatient care but without daily medical supervision by physicians. Length of stay in all these settings varies according to each person's needs.
Additional Youth Services
Treatment options for youth are identical to those available for adults with the following additional services:
School program: Residential and partial care youth spend two to three hours each day in an educational program operated by state certified teachers. Time is spent on assignments provided by the youth's home school to ensure as much academic progress as possible during treatment. At discharge, our staff works with the youth's teachers and counselor to make re-entry into school as smooth as possible.
Parent group: Parents meet weekly with a youth counselor to discuss issues associated with having an adolescent who uses, abuses, or is dependent on alcohol and/or other drugs. Parents often become angry, hurt and/or saddened by dealing with a substance using/abusing child. This group provides an open forum to discuss feelings and receive support from other parents.
Family Workshop
Family participation is a vital part of successful recovery. Everyone in the family is affected by one member's chemical use. For this reason, we encourage all family members age 16 and older, as well as close friends, to participate in the family workshop. The workshop also helps families acquire better coping skills, reduce conflict and learn intervention guidelines. We provide this workshop at no cost to families and friends of Independence Center clients.
We also offer ongoing family aftercare and parent support groups.
Adult Extended Support
After outpatient care, adults may attend weekly peer support groups, led by volunteers, as a bridge to long-term recovery in a 12-step program. This group provides graduates a chance to continue using and discussing their recovery skills in daily living and to deal with problems that may threaten recovery. Adult Independence Center graduates may attend this group as long as they wish at no additional cost. Those attending are no longer official clients of the Independence Center and have no formal contact with a counselor.
Intervention Nurse Consultation
Designated Independence Center nurses provide bedside consultation services when ordered by the attending physician. These nurses provide an assessment and corresponding recommendation for those hospitalized at BryanLGH East or West, Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center or Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital. This is an excellent opportunity for professional intervention when patients are hospitalized for other medical reasons.
