Prepared Childbirth Education
This is a four-week class for expectant parents. Emphasis is placed on making childbirth a positive experience and to allow you, as a family, to take an active role in your birth experience and in your care at the medical center. Classes are usually taken during the sixth to seventh month of pregnancy. Class is offered on Sundays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 7-9:30 p.m. Cost is $65 per four-week session.
Accelerated Childbirth Education
This two-week class is for those who want a faster-paced class or are unable to attend a weekday evening class. The class content is the same. Class is offered on Saturdays from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Cost is $70.
Breastfeeding Basics
This single session class emphasizes basic breastfeeding techniques. BryanLGH lactation consultants will address the breastfeeding cycle, nursing aids, nursing positions, latch, breast pumps and more. Your spouse or partner is encouraged to attend. Class is offered on the first Thursday of each month from 7-9:15 p.m. Cost is $20.
Baby Signs
Just because babies can’t talk, doesn’t mean they don’t have a lot to say! They often know exactly what they want, but because they can’t produce words, all they can do is cry. The Baby Signs® program at BryanLGH teaches parents to model signs for things their child likely wants to say such as “hot,” “hungry,” “thirsty” or “more.”
Two decades of research have proven that using the Baby Signs® Program:
- Reduces tears, tantrums and frustration
- Allows babies to express needs and share their worlds
- Enriches interactions between adults and babies
- Strengthens the parent/infant bond
- Helps babies learn to talk
- Promotes positive emotional development such as self-confidence and self-esteem, and jumpstarts intellectual development
This fun class makes learning signs a breeze for everyone in the family. It is designed for parents with children ages six to 24 months. Early childhood educators, parent educators, social workers and health specialists also are welcome. The class is taught by a certified Baby Signs® instructor in a single evening session – the second Tuesday of each month – from 7-9 p.m. Cost is $55 per couple, which includes a book, two educational DVDs and a quick reference chart.
Baby Cares
This three-week series of classes is for expectant parents or parents with a newborn. Emphasis is placed on the basics of baby care — bathing, feeding, signs of illness, how to take baby’s temperature and home safety. Infant growth and development and adjustment to family life are also discussed. Class begins on the first Thursday of every month, from 7-9 p.m. Cost is $40 for the series.
CPR for Family and Friends
For parents and expectant parents. This course teaches infant/pediatric/adult CPR with emphasis on infant and airway obstruction relief. Time needed to cover course content may vary based on class size. Single, three-hour session. Cost is $20 per person.
Super Sibling
A baby is coming! For mom and dad, it’s a happy event. Big brother and sister, however, may view this new arrival with questionable enthusiasm or feelings of loss. But siblings at BryanLGH Medical Center won't feel left out because this class includes them in the birth process. Class is held the first Sunday of the month from 1-2 p.m. Cost is $10 per family.
Childbirth Unit Tour
Expectant parents are welcome to visit our childbirth unit, including labor and delivery rooms, post partum and the nurseries. Tours are given Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 3-4 p.m. Our registered nurses, who are certified lactation consultants, will be your hosts; no registration is necessary. To join us, just meet in the main lobby of BryanLGH Medical Center East, 1600 S. 48th St.
