LINCOLN, Neb. — BryanLGH Medical Center announced today the creation of the Louis J. Gogela, Sr., MD, Institute of Neuroscience at BryanLGH West, 2300 S. 16th St. The Institute’s name is a tribute to Dr. Gogela, who was a pioneer and leader in neurosurgery in Lincoln and the state. The Institute will offer the most advanced and innovative neuroscience services in the region.
“The Institute will provide Nebraskans with the best diagnoses and treatment of neurological disorders,” said Craig M. Ames, president and COO, BryanLGH Medical Center. “Neurological research and education also will be key components of the Institute.”
The Louis J. Gogela Sr., MD, Institute of Neuroscience is named in honor of the late Dr. Gogela, a native Nebraskan who started his practice in 1950 as the only neurosurgeon in Lincoln. He went on to become recognized for expanding on innovative neurosurgical techniques, a dedication to the treatment of his patients, the advocacy of his profession and his ongoing participation in medical education.
The new Institute will allow BryanLGH and the neurosurgeons and neurologists on the medical staff, along with those in other medical disciplines, to work together to bring new focus and intensity to the medical center’s existing neuroscience services. Through the Institute, the medical center and the physicians will collaborate to offer the best patient care and practice standards, including: best outcomes, world-class technology and a foundation for ongoing research, and education of patients, physicians and healthcare providers of all disciplines.
Dr. Louis J. Gogela, Sr., was born in 1917 in Omaha and received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska School of Medicine in 1943. He began his neurosurgery training at the Mayo Clinic and started his own practice in 1950. Dr. Gogela was considered a pioneer in neurosurgery and participated in medical education throughout his career. He helped found the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. Dr. Gogela passed away earlier this year.
